Aizawl: Mizoram home minister K Sapdanga on Thursday said he was pleased that Operation Trident targeted drug-trafficking kingpins, not only carriers or “mules”.The operation led to the arrest of 18 people, the seizure of cash and detonators, and the freezing of 1,424 bank accounts. The joint operation by Mizoram Police, Narcotics Control Bureau and Enforcement Directorate was conducted last Friday in Aizawl, Champhai and Lawngtlai districts and Churachandpur in Manipur. It also led to the seizure of 500 detonators and Rs 12 lakh in cash.At a meeting with Young Mizo Association (YMA) leaders, Sapdanga said the operation was the beginning of a nationwide anti-drug campaign. He urged the YMA, a major civil society organisation, to work with enforcement agencies to dismantle the regional drug syndicate. He said the operation’s success should be measured by the number of youths protected from drug abuse, families relieved of domestic conflict and improvements in law and order.YMA leaders welcomed the operation and called drug traffickers “enemies of the people”.Sapdanga said coordinated operations in Assam and Manipur had led to five arrests in an inter-state drug trafficking investigation. Basanta Doley, Elajyoti Pegu Doley and Jitu Kalita were arrested in Guwahati, while Paotinmang Haokip and Nemhoiting Khongsai were arrested in Churachandpur.
