Aizawl: The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Tuesday observed ‘Black Day’ in Aizawl city and south Mizoram’s Lunglei town, protesting the BJP-led NDA govt’s proposed amendment to the Foreign Contribution Regulation (FCRA).Protesters urged the Centre to withdraw the proposed changes and demanded steps to end persecution of Christians across the country. The MPCC also called on CM Lalduhoma to publicly show solidarity with “the Christian communities persecuted in India” and to bring together church leaders, civil society groups and political parties to meet the Prime Minister in Delhi and press for withdrawal of the proposed amendment.Saying the proposed FCRA amendment would be harmful to Christian institutions, Congress asked Mizoram’s two MPs to speak against the proposed legislation and vote against it “without abstention.” The party also urged the ZPM govt to convene a special session of the state legislative assembly to pass a resolution opposing the FCRA amendment bill.Addressing the gathering, senior vice president of the MPCC, Lalnunmawia Chuaungo, said the proposed FCRA Amendment Bill, 2026, “will adversely affect the Christian institutions, especially in the state where contributions from foreign countries, especially for charitable institutions like orphanages, hospitals and centres for people with disabilities.”Chuaungo said under the FCRA Amendment Bill, 2026, “all the assets created by the churches and non-governmental organisations through contributions of foreign institutions will be liable to be confiscated.”Former MP and All India Congress Committee in charge of Mizoram Chella Kumar said Congress opposed the FCRA amendment, alleging that BJP had been targeting religious and other minorities while exempting the RSS from its purview.
