Guwahati: Election Commission will update Assam’s electoral roll through a Special Summary Revision (SSR) beginning Nov 2.The exercise will enrol eligible young, first-time and omitted voters, with Jan 1, 2027, as the qualifying date. The final roll will be published on Jan 4.The commission has ordered SSR in 16 other states and Union territories. In a letter dated Oct 15 to the chief electoral officers of the 17 states and UTs, it also directed them to accept advance applications for the later qualifying dates — April 1, July 1 and Oct 1, 2027.Under the schedule, polling stations will be rationalised by Nov 2. Draft rolls will be published on Nov 12, while the period for filing claims and objections will continue until Dec 11. Their disposal is scheduled to be completed by Dec 28.Assam was excluded from the nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) launched in 2025 because of its separate citizenship regime and the inconclusive National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise. Instead, a Special Revision (SR) was conducted in the state before the assembly elections in March. The SR included a house-to-house survey but did not involve document verification, unlike SIR.The final roll, published on Feb 10, contained 2,49,58,139 voters. More than 10.56 lakh names were deleted, including 4.78 lakh due to deaths and 5.23 lakh due to shifting. Another 53,619 entries flagged as demographically similar were corrected. The roll retained 93,021 “D-voters”, whose citizenship cases are under adjudication, without altering their particulars.
