Shillong: Meghalaya’s Performance Grading Index (PGI) score rose from 401.62 in 2022-23 to 525.71 in 2025-26, moving the state from Akanshi-3 to Akanshi-1. The jump marks the first time Meghalaya has moved out of the lowest performance band under PGI 2.0, according to the Meghalaya School Performance Grading Index (MSPGI) 2025-26 released by education minister Lakhmen Rymbui on Friday.Prepared by the education department using certified UDISE+ 2025-26 data, the MSPGI is a school-level assessment framework covering 11,443 recognised schools in all 12 districts. Schools are assessed on 43 indicators across five domains — accessibility, digital education, infrastructure, NEP-related activities and quality parameters — against a maximum composite score of 1,000.Rymbui said the MSPGI is intended as a diagnostic and planning tool, not a ranking exercise, to help schools identify strengths and areas needing attention.Schools are placed in one of 17 performance grades, from Utkarsh (outstanding) to Akanshi-10 (intensive support), enabling assessment against defined standards rather than only relative comparison, an official statement said.The MSPGI is modelled on the national PGI administered by the Union ministry of education, which assesses states and Union Territories on similar dimensions, including access, infrastructure, equity, governance and teacher-related parameters.The education department has asked schools to use their report cards as the starting point for improvement: review findings, discuss them with teachers and School Management Committees, identify priority gaps, plan feasible actions, seek support from block and district authorities where needed, and track progress in the next cycle.Rymbui reiterated the govt’s focus on evidence-based planning and continuous improvement, saying the MSPGI — alongside existing academic and administrative processes — will help schools meet approved institutional standards and strengthen Meghalaya’s performance under the national PGI in the coming years.
