Rajahmundry: Police have altered the sections of the case, wherein a medico who was run over by two drunk men driving an SUV near Prasaditya Mall in Rajahmundry on Aug 3 and was declared brain-dead, to attempt to commit culpable homicide. The move comes after doctors declared her dead on Sunday.Dr Kanike Priyanka, a first-year PG dermatology student, battled for life for nearly a week in hospital after suffering grievous injuries to her head and face in the accident.According to East Godavari SP D Narasimha Kishore, based on the complaint filed by V Venkata Durga Sai Umesh, her friend and a first-year MD radiology student at GSL Medical College, an FIR was initially registered under BNS Section 125 (rash or negligent act that endangers human life). However, after a thorough examination of CCTV footage, witness statements, and medical evidence, the sections were altered to Section 110 r/w 3(5) BNS (attempt to commit culpable homicide).Umesh, 28, and Priyanka were exiting Prasaditya Mall on their two-wheeler after watching a movie when the accused arrived at the mall in an intoxicated state to watch a movie.When the security staff denied them entry, they got into an altercation. Subsequently, when the accused attempted to speed into the mall in their Tata Nexon, security personnel tried to shut the gate. But, the accused ended up hitting the victims’ two-wheeler from behind.Priyanka sustained severe injuries to her head, nose, ears, and face, while the complainant also suffered greivous injuries. The victims were immediately rushed to GSL Independent Hospital, from where Priyanka was later shifted to KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad for advanced treatment. But doctors there declared her brain dead.The accused, Daswanth (24) and Desabhaktula Andrew Joseph Edward (23), fled after the spot, but police identified and detained them using CCTV footage and technical evidence on Aug 6. They were produced before the Second First Class Magistrate Court on Aug 7, which remanded them to judicial custody till Aug 21.A petition will soon be filed in court seeking their police custody for further evidence collection and a comprehensive investigation.KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad, informed the Prakash Nagar police that Priyanka, who was critically injured, died on Sunday, following which police altered the case to 106 (2) r/w 3(5) BNS.Police said a comprehensive investigation will be conducted, and they will consult special public prosecutors and legal experts to file a chargesheet and ensure the accused are punished in a timely manner.
