Gurgaon: Security was tightened at Medanta on Wednesday after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted there following his 20-day fast at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, with only patients, their attendants and hospital staff being allowed entry.In a health bulletin, the hospital said Wangchuk was stable, but being monitored in ICU and attended to by a multidisciplinary team of doctors.“Presently, he is stable, oriented and his vital signs are within accepted parameters. All treatment being administered to him is in accordance with his informed consent,” the bulletin, signed by medical superintendent Dr Sanjay Durani, stated.Hospital sources said Wangchuk was under the care of Dr Yatin Mehta, chairman of critical care and anaesthesiology at the hospital, and his condition was being monitored closely. His pulse rate was 68 beats per minute, blood pressure 120/70 mmHg and oxygen saturation was 100% on room air. He slept for six to eight hours overnight.On Wednesday, barricades were put up at entry gates to the hospital, while police personnel were deployed across the campus. Security was beefed up at the emergency block to check the identity of visitors.The heightened security came after a few people attempted to gather outside the hospital. Two members of Samajwadi Party from UP also briefly staged a sit-in at a park near the hospital’s emergency gate, holding placards in support of Wangchuk. They dispersed after cops intervened.Later in the evening, a delegation of opposition MPs led by AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh staged a sit-in outside the hospital after they were stopped from meeting Wangchuk. Singh told TOI that the delegation was carrying a letter signed by 55 MPs urging Wangchuk to end his hunger strike given his deteriorating health. “We are not even being allowed to hand over the letter or meet him,” he said.Samajwadi Party MP Priya Saroj said the delegation would remain until it was granted access.Wangchuk joined the CJP-led protest at Jantar Mantar on June 28 in support of students demanding accountability over alleged irregularities in examinations, reforms in the education system and the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.He was forcibly removed from Jantar Mantar on July 18 after a 20-day hunger strike and shifted to Safdarjung Hospital. He was discharged from the hospital and shifted to Medanta for further treatment under a panel of doctors at the private facility on court directions on Tuesday. The court’s direction came on a plea filed by Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, seeking his transfer to the private facility, citing his deteriorating health following a prolonged hunger strike.In a letter to Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, Wangchuk said he would end his hunger strike if the govt assured him that no legal action would be taken against the young protesters demanding accountability over the NEET paper leak. He earlier refused to end his fast, which entered its 25th day, following the police action during the CJP-led ‘Sansad Chalo’ march on Tuesday. Nadda and Singh visited Wangchuk on Tuesday evening and spent about 45 minutes with him.
