MCD cracks down on health trades after Hauz Rani fire; 6,436 inspected, only 33 sealed

New Delhi: A month after the fire incident at Hauz Rani in Malviya Nagar, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has inspected 6,436 health trade establishments, found 84 operating without a fire No Objection Certificate (NOC), issued 285 challans, 245 show-cause notices and 240 closure notices, but sealed only 33 premises. The health department has now directed all District Health Officers (DHOs) to submit a trade-wise detailed action taken report by July 10.“The department has made it clear that inspections alone are not sufficient and that violations must be pursued till final enforcement. District health officers have been asked to furnish a comprehensive trade-wise action taken report by July 10 to ensure accountability and enable the corporation to present the status of compliance before the courts,” an MCD official told TOI.The measures were undertaken following the Hauz Rani fire incident. However, advocates appearing in PILs before the Supreme Court and the High Court observed that the action had remained incomplete, the official said. The reports will be compiled and submitted to senior authorities to facilitate further directions and enable the civic body to present its enforcement status before the Supreme Court and the High Court, the official added.
