Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), in a bid to make waste collection more effective, has appealed to all apartments in the city to segregate dry and wet waste at source.MCC commissioner Rahul Ratnam Pandey said that a meeting on waste management involving pourakarmikas and outsourced employees will be held at the city corporation on Tuesday. “All issues about the waste collection, including the problems of the workers, will be discussed in the meeting. Based on the outcome, we will take decisions to bring reforms in the waste collection,” he said.While bulk waste generators are mandatorily required to process wet waste into manure, all others may hand over the segregated waste to the city corporation. The commissioner said that all apartments and other establishments should segregate waste at the source. “Both commercial and residential apartments should segregate the waste. The rest will be taken care of by the city corporation. We have a big unit for managing wet waste. One company is already managing waste using black soldier fly technology. Segregation has been a major issue for the company,” he said.The state has been revising the bylaw for waste management. The Model Bylaw 2026 has been published, seeking objections. Once it is finalised by the govt, MCC will start implementing the same. The city corporation already has pourkarmikas, and the urban local body has also appointed workers on outsource basis too. They will conduct door-to-door waste collection. Previously, it was a tender-based model till 2022-23, he said. On legacy waste, the commissioner said that there are several issues, including space constraints. The city corporation will see how it can be resolved, he added.
