MC to shift allotted street vendors to designated sites from today

Chandigarh: The municipal corporation (MC) Chandigarh will carry out a coordinated zone-wise drive on Aug 21 and 22 to shift eligible street vendors to the vending sites allotted to them through the prescribed draw-of-lots process.Municipal commissioner Amit Kumar Thursday said the exercise is being conducted in compliance with Supreme Court directions and in accordance with the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, and the Chandigarh Street Vending Bye-Laws, 2018. The aim, he said, is to ensure systematic regulation of street vending while enabling eligible vendors to operate from their allotted sites. The exercise will be undertaken across five zones by joint field teams comprising officials from the enforcement, roads and medical officer of health (MOH) wings of the civic body. Vehicles, machinery and manpower have been arranged for smooth implementation of the drive.According to the MC, vendors have already been informed about their allotted sites and will be shifted from their existing locations to the designated vending zones. The commissioner said vendors allotted vending sites must operate only from those locations. If any such vendor is found vending at an unauthorised spot, action will be taken for removal of the unauthorised vending or encroachment in accordance with applicable laws and bye-laws.The field teams will maintain records of vendors shifted to allotted sites, those found operating from unauthorised locations and encroachments removed during the exercise. A consolidated compliance report will be prepared after the drive.Kumar also directed field teams to ensure that vendors shifted during the operation do not return to their previous locations or any other unauthorised spot.
