Chandigarh: Mayor Saurabh Joshi highlighted Chandigarh’s success in clearing the Dadumajra legacy waste dump and pitched for a longer tenure for elected mayors during the All India Mayors’ Council meeting held in New Delhi.The meeting was chaired by Union housing and urban affairs minister Manohar Lal Khattar and attended by mayors from 11 cities across the country.Representing Chandigarh, Joshi showcased the Dadumajra dumping ground’s transformation as an example of environmental revival and sustainable urban development. He informed the gathering that the legacy waste had been scientifically processed and removed, helping reclaim the site and improve environmental conditions.The mayor also advocated increasing the tenure of elected mayors, arguing that major infrastructure projects, sanitation reforms, environmental initiatives and citizen-centric governance require continuity and sustained leadership.He said meaningful progress on long-term urban development projects is difficult to achieve within a short tenure and called for a governance framework that allows mayors adequate time to implement and complete key initiatives.
