Chandigarh: The investigation into the daylight murder of Janaki Das, a cashier at a chemist shop in Sector 11, gained momentum Thursday after Chandigarh Police secured the custody of alleged mastermind Amit Kumar alias Sharabi from Jammu on a production warrant.Produced before a district court, Amit was remanded to four days in police custody for further interrogation.Police said Amit would be questioned about the alleged murder conspiracy, including the motive behind the killing, the person who allegedly commissioned it, the procurement of weapons and the whereabouts of absconding suspects.Investigators are also set to seek the remand of alleged shooter Sunny Mehra, who was injured in a police encounter, and his associate Aryan Sharma. All three accused will be interrogated together to verify their statements, resolve discrepancies and establish the conspiracy trail, police said.A major focus of the probe remains the recovery of the foreign-made Zigana pistol allegedly used in the murder. Investigators believe Amit’s interrogation could help trace the weapon and identify those involved in concealing or disposing of it.According to police, Amit had earlier claimed during questioning that he placed the pistols in an envelope and discarded them in the Sector 43 area after the crime. However, the weapons are yet to be recovered.Sunny Mehra and Aryan Sharma were earlier arrested by Chandigarh Police in Jammu and Kashmir, while Amit was apprehended by Jammu Police. Since his arrest, Amit had remained in Jammu Police custody and was interrogated in phases under successive seven-day remands.
