Manipur MP Sharda Devi vows welfare schemes for IDPs, focuses on women & children

Imphal: Newly elected Manipur Rajya Sabha MP and state BJP president A Sharda Devi on Saturday said she would work to ensure that the Centre’s welfare schemes reach internally displaced persons (IDPs), particularly women and children living in relief camps across the state.Responding to questions on steps for women and children affected by the ethnic conflict, Sharda Devi said BJP has formed a dedicated support group for mothers and children in relief camps. She said the initiative is supervised by party workers and volunteers to provide care and assistance. After her election to the Rajya Sabha, she met members of the group during a reception programme on Saturday and reiterated her commitment to their welfare. “As a Rajya Sabha MP, I will make every effort to ensure that all welfare schemes of the Govt of India reach the displaced families. Whatever assistance I can provide in my capacity as an MP, I will try my best to extend,” she said.Referring to the continuing displacement caused by the conflict in Manipur, Sharda Devi said many families are still unable to return to their homes. She said she considers it a serious concern and expressed support for the efforts of the central and Manipur govts to facilitate the safe return and rehabilitation of displaced families. The MP said she would hold discussions with the concerned authorities to explore additional steps that could be taken for the welfare and rehabilitation of those living in relief camps.According to the latest govt data, more than 40,000 people displaced by the violence that erupted in Manipur in May 2023 continue to live in relief camps across the state while the govt pursues rehabilitation and resettlement efforts.
