Bengaluru: Losing a mobile phone to a thief turned out to be far worse for a rail passenger who lost Rs 67,000 from her bank account earlier this month.The woman Krishna Veni (name changed) had boarded Train No. 12577 Bhagmati Express from Katpadi railway station to Mysuru on July 16 on a sleeper class coach.By around 4.45pm, the train had reached KSR Bengaluru, where a significant number of passengers had boarded, creating a huge rush in the S1 coach. According to govt railway police (GRP), Krishna Veni had kept the phone on the table next to her seat and was taking some pills from her bag. She then saw that her phone was missing. She searched around her coupe but had no luck finding her Oppp device. “The phone allegedly stolen was worth around Rs 28,000,” a GRP officer said.Left without any other window of communication, the woman had to continue her journey without the phone. While she was worried about losing the device, something worse had already started to happen.Later the same day, her son received a text from her phone asking for bank details and the pin. The robber allegedly pretended to be the woman and conveyed her son through a message that she had forgotten her account credentials. Veni’s son replied with the details. “The robber transferred a total of Rs 67,749 from two bank accounts linked with the phone number through UPI,” the officer said.Krishna Veni, a resident of KR Pura reached railway police station at KSR Bengaluru Saturday and filed a formal complaint. On the basis of the complaint, GRP has registered a case under section 305 (C) of the BNS and section 66 (C) of the IT Act.
