Hisar: A local court on Monday convicted a man of molesting and attempting to rape his 10-year-old stepdaughter, sentencing him to 10 years in prison and imposing a fine of Rs 1.2 lakh.Of the fine amount, Rs 1 lakh will go to the survivor as compensation. The court also directed the state govt to pay her an additional Rs 2 lakh.The incident dates back to 2025, when the girl was a Class III student. The convict is her stepfather, her mother’s second husband.During the trial, the defence argued that he had not committed the offence, but the court relied on the girl’s statement recorded before a legal authority.According to the prosecution, the girl told the police that on March 8, 2025, her mother and brother had gone out, leaving her alone with the accused at home.She said he attempted to assault her, but her mother arrived in time. When her mother confronted him, he slapped her. The girl said she used the opportunity to run away, and the family later informed the police.Police arranged for the girl to receive counselling and undergo a medical examination, and her statement was recorded before a legal authority. A case was registered against the accused under various sections, including molestation. He was arrested and later taken to the scene as part of the investigation.The verdict came about a year and a half after the incident.
