Ahmedabad: A 26-year-old man from Nadiad was allegedly cheated of Rs 2.6 lakh after being promised a work permit and a visa for Luxembourg by an international consultancy in Navrangpura.According to the complaint registered with Navrangpura police on Friday, he came across a mobile number while searching online for overseas employment opportunities in Sep 2024. After contacting the person, he was directed to an international consultancy operating near Law Garden in Ahmedabad. When he visited the place, staff members discussed work permit opportunities in Norway and Luxembourg with him.The complainant subsequently opted for a Luxembourg work permit. He was told that the process would cost around Rs 10.5 lakh. He initially paid Rs 1 lakh through a cheque and another Rs 50,000 through an online payment to an account linked to one of the persons associated with the consultancy.The complainant said the consultancy later continued processing his documents and arranged police and document verification. He was allegedly told that he would have to pay another Rs 2.5 lakh after receiving the offer letter.After arranging funds, he transferred Rs 1 lakh in two instalments of Rs 50,000 each on April 30 and May 1, 2025, the complaint states. The consultancy allegedly assured him that his work permit would arrive by June and also advised him to leave his existing job.The complainant said he waited for several months and was called to Mumbai on three occasions for a visa-related process, but the promised procedure was allegedly not completed. He was later called to Pune, where he underwent an administrative process linked to Estonia instead of Luxembourg, and paid an additional Rs 15,000 online. He also alleged that the consultancy kept his passport for nearly two months.According to the complaint, from Sept 2024 to date, he paid a total of Rs 2.6 lakh but neither received the promised Luxembourg work permit nor a visa.Police have registered a complaint for cheating and are investigating the alleged financial transactions, communication and documents submitted during the overseas employment process.
