Man files plaint against two for assault, 50k extortion in Gariahat

Kolkata: Gariahat police have registered an FIR on charges of extortion, assault and criminal intimidation following a complaint by a site in-charge of a construction firm, who alleged that two men, Chiku Manna and Uttam Mondal, and their associates disrupted work at a building project on Jamini Roy Road and demanded money and business rights.According to the complainant, the trouble began in Jan this year after construction started at the site. A group allegedly entered the premises, abused workers and extorted Rs 50,000 from the company as local syndicate fee. The money was allegedly received by Mondal. The complainant, a resident of Sreedhar Roy Road, further alleged that he was stalked over the following months. On June 21,the accused and their associates entered the site and demanded to be appointed as building material suppliers.The group allegedly contacted the firm’s promoters, demanded protection money and ordered them to halt construction. They then assaulted the site manager, causing injuries to his chest and body. Police reached the spot at 1.35 am after receiving a call, but the accused had fled. The victim was treated at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital and later discharged.
