COIMBATORE: The Thudiyalur police in the city have registered a case against a 40-year-old man on charges of cheating a private firm manager of Rs 55.7 lakh by promising a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), auctioned gold and a job at the Coimbatore airport.The victim has been identified as Kalaperumal Albert, 40, of Vellakinaru Road near the Thudiyalur RTO office. According to police, Albert became acquainted with the suspect, Das, at the Living Hope Church in Vilankurichi in the city. Das claimed that he was working at the city airport. Further, he promised to get for Albert a new MPV through airport auction for a subsidised price of Rs 15 lakh. He offered to procure 250 gram of 99.9% pure gold, allegedly seized by airport officials, for Rs 18.50 lakh. He also guaranteed to secure a job for Albert at the airport, for which the victim handed over his educational certificates and documents.To further solidify the scam, Das claimed that he possessed one kg of gold worth Rs 56 lakh, inducing Albert to invest more money. Under the pretext of arranging the vehicle, gold and employment, the suspect collected a total sum of Rs 55.70 lakh from Albert in several instalments. The transactions were made through a combination of cash payments and direct bank transfers.On realising that he had been deceived and that none of the promises would materialise, Albert approached the Thudiyalur police.
