Ahmedabad: A man was booked for suicide abetment on Thursday, 10 days after his 27-year-old wife ended life allegedly by drinking acid at their rented accommodation in Bapunagar on Sept 23. She died during treatment at Civil Hospital.According to the complaint filed by the woman’s father, the couple had married in 2023. He alleged that his son-in-law was addicted to alcohol and frequently subjected his daughter to verbal and physical abuse.The complainant said his daughter frequently returned to her parental home following alleged harassment, but was sent back after interventions by family members and community elders.He alleged that the accused would consume alcohol, abuse his daughter and assault her. According to the complaint, the woman had left her matrimonial home in Uttar Pradesh once and the couple’s Bapunagar residence twice because following harassment.The complaint states that around five to seven days before her death the woman called her mother from an unknown number and complained about assault by her ‘drunk’ husband.“She asked her mother to take her back home as she did not want to stay with her husband,” complainant stated.On Sept 23, the husband allegedly called the victim’s sister and informed the family that she had consumed acid while he was asleep. He later took her body to Uttar Pradesh for last rites.The woman’s father alleged that repeated harassment and threats to die had driven his daughter to take the extreme step.Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against the husband and are investigating the circumstances leading to the woman’s death.
