Times News NetworkChandigarh: A minor argument over an accidental foot touch while dancing to a DJ during Ganesh immersion celebrations in Attawa, Sector 42, escalated into a group assault on Friday. Several youths allegedly surrounded and thrashed a man with kicks and punches. The victim also suffered a minor sharp-edged weapon injury and was admitted in GMSH-16 for treatment.The injured was identified as Deepak, a resident of Attawa.A 2-minute, 24-second video of the incident shows a group of youths surrounding Deepak and assaulting him. Police Station-36 has registered a case against unidentified persons on his complaint and launched an investigation.According to Deepak, Ganesh idols had been installed in his locality and residents had gone together for immersion on Friday. After the ceremony, they returned to Attawa, where a DJ had been arranged. People then started dancing.During the celebrations, a youth allegedly stepped on Deepak’s foot. An argument followed. Deepak alleged that several youths then surrounded him and started beating him.People present at the spot tried to intervene and stop the fight. However, the attackers allegedly continued assaulting him.The video shows several youths surrounding Deepak as he tries to escape. He is allegedly caught again and knocked to the ground. He is then seen being kicked and punched by the group. Some women can also be seen trying to intervene and rescue him.A policeman carrying a baton is also visible in the video. He appears to be trying to disperse the youths.According to Deepak, some of the youths were still present when police reached the spot. However, no immediate arrest was made.Sector-36 police said a case had been registered on Deepak’s complaint. They are scrutinising CCTV footage from cameras installed near the spot to identify those involved in the assault.
