Surat: The family of a 38-year-old policeman from Surat lost Rs 1.02 lakh to cyberfraud after he inadvertently installing a malicious application, by clicking on an APK file sent through WhatsApp that was disguised as a wedding invitation.According to the FIR, Pankajdan Gadhvi, a resident of Sachin, received a WhatsApp message on Sep 4 containing a file purported to be a wedding invitation card. He downloaded and clicked on the APK file on his mobile phone.Gadhvi operates his wife’s HDFC Bank account from his phone. Soon after the installation, several transactions were carried out from the account without consent. Gadhvi found that Rs 1.02 lakh had been withdrawn in multiple transactions.He subsequently contacted the 1930 cybercrime helpline and reported the incident.On Wednesday he approached police and lodged an FIR for cheating and cheating by personation, and Sections 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act.Police launched an investigation to identify the scammers.
