Maladministration led to deaths outside Bowring hospital in Bengaluru: Lokayukta

Bengaluru: Terming the wall collapse tragedy that claimed seven lives at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital (rechristened as Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hospital) as a fallout of “maladministration”, Karnataka Lokayukta Justice BS Patil Thursday announced that action would be taken against those responsible.Accompanied by Upa Lokayuktas Justice B Veerappa and Justice KN Phaneendra, Justice Patil interacted with the injured persons and instructed officials to ensure free, high-quality treatment for them. “Prima facie, it is proved that the fallen compound wall was made of cement blocks with a weak foundation. Dumping of a huge quantity of sand next to the compound further weakened the structure, which collapsed in the rain,” Patil said, adding that a suo motu case would be registered against the officials concerned.“GBA officials and others should do city rounds to identify more such dilapidated structures, where children and others walk around. Such weak structures should be demolished immediately and new ones should be built,” he said.Justice Patil added that GBA should ensure the removal of garbage from the place and address waterlogging issues in and around Bowring hospital. “Underpasses at Seshadripuram and Tindlu had waterlogging issues, which were addressed later. Similarly, it should be done here,” he said.
