MUMBAI: Mumbai Police on Saturday detained activist Tushar Gandhi and others ahead of a proposed demonstration at August Kranti Maidan in solidarity with the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and head of the organisation ‘Hum Bharat Ke Log’, was picked up from Bandra and taken to DN Nagar police station, an official said.Gandhi had shared a poster on X urging citizens to join a protest gathering at August Kranti Maidan at 3.30pm.Activist Feeroz Mithiborwala was also taken into custody from his residence and shifted to the MIDC police station, officials said.The detentions came ahead of the proposed demonstration, which was organised in solidarity with the CJP’s planned mobilisation at Jantar Mantar against alleged irregularities in the electoral process.
Mumbai Police cites lack of permission for protest
Ahead of the proposed gathering, Zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Ragasudha R said no application seeking permission for the event had been submitted to Gamdevi police station and no official approval had been granted.Authorities said August Kranti Maidan is not a designated protest site under a Bombay High Court order. Police took preventive action to maintain law and order ahead of the proposed demonstration.
CJP protest targets CEC Gyanesh Kumar over SIR
The CJP has called for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of voter-list manipulation during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and changes relating to Form 6, which is used for voter registration.More than 1,500 people have been detained from several parts of Delhi ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) proposed protest at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, as police intensified preventive measures across the national capital.(With PTI inputs)
