Bengaluru: The consulate general of Italy in Bengaluru, in collaboration with National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Bengaluru and ministry of culture, will host “One mother, many mother tongues”, an exhibition featuring masterpieces from Italy and India.The exhibition is from Aug 20-Sept 20 at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Bengaluru.It will trace the evolving representations of motherhood across cultures and centuries. A highlight is Sandro Botticelli’s Madonna and Child (c. 1490), which will be presented in India for the first time.The painting will offer art lovers a rare opportunity to encounter one of the greatest masters of Renaissance alongside ancient Etruscan sculptures in marble, schist, sandstone and terracotta. Among the Indian works to be presented is a Kushan-period Hariti from Mathura museum.The exhibition will also bring together masterpieces from lesser-known sites and provincial museums, including a sculpture of Skandamata from a remote temple of Thaneshwar near Udaipur.From Italy, a group of ancient Etruscan images of Mater Matuta — the protector goddess of children and a symbol of dawn, renewal and regeneration — will be presented.“The exhibition represents an important milestone in the cultural dialogue between Italy and India as we look ahead to India-Italy year of culture and tourism.
