Ludhiana: Plans to relocate Ludhiana’s stalled carcass utilisation plant to the Jamalpur garbage dump site triggered strong local opposition on Tuesday, even as civic officials admit no concrete decision has been made while investigations continue into the recent theft of the plant’s machinery.Former East constituency MLA Ranjit Singh Dhillon, alongside nearby residents, threatened a major agitation against setting up the facility at the dumpsite, citing health and environmental hazards for surrounding residential areas. Dhillon alleged that a private firm has already taken site measurements and criticised the local ruling party MLA for failing to intervene with state authorities.A history of opposition & machinery theftBuilt under the Ludhiana Smart City Mission to dispose of dead animals scientifically, the Noorpur plant was completed in July 2021 but never officially opened due to fierce village protests. Though operated briefly for a week in 2024 following National Green Tribunal (NGT) pressure, fresh agitation forced it back under lock and key.While sitting idle, key machinery was stolen from the locked facility despite security cover. Municipal corporation superintending engineer Sham Lal Gupta stated that police are investigating the breach, adding that insurance will cover the stolen equipment. Gupta emphasised that the site shift remains undecided as the civic body awaits answers from law enforcement.
