Ghaziabad: Police on Saturday arrested the fifth accused for the murder of a Omkar, a dairy farm owner from Loni, two weeks ago. Gaurav Nagar, who was carrying a bounty of Rs 50,000, was taken into custody after a gunfight in which he suffered injuries. With Nagar, the total number of arrests in the case stands at 28. Over 20 people were arrested for sheltering the accused. They are relatives of the youths. However, police said Omkar’s body is still missing. SDRF teams and flood units of PAC are searching for the body along a 180-km stretch of the Ganga canal near Baghpat, Hapur, Meerut and Ghaziabad.Loni ACP Siddharth Gautam said Gaurav was arrested after police received a tip-off on his location. “We were informed that the accused would be travelling from Banthla to Chirodi. Acting on this information, a police team set up a checkpoint near the canal on the Banthla-Chirodi road,” he said.Gaurav approached the checkpoint in a white Swift car and was signalled to stop but he attempted to escape. The police team chased him, which led to the Swift colliding with a tree. Following this, Gaurav got down from the car and tried to run on foot while shooting at the team. In self-defence, police shot him in both legs. He was later taken to a hospital where he is undergoing treatment. The ACP said Gaurav confessed to the crime and admitted he and his four accomplices planned to kill Omkar because of a road rage incident between Omkar’s son and one of the accused. On May 30, the group of five shot Omkar near a railway underpass in Loni, bundled his body into a car and dumped it near a canal on the Rohta-Meerut road. The accused, who have now been booked for attempt to murder, kidnapping and criminal conspiracy, will murder charges after Omkar’s body is discovered.
