Canacona civic body relocates roadside vendors to Chaudi market complex

Canacona: Acting on public demand, the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) has finally relocated fish, fruit and vegetable vendors from the roadside to the main market area at Chaudi in Canacona. Many locals had complained about traffic congestion caused by vendors operating along the road.Speaking to TOI, former councilor Dheeraj Naik Gaonkar stated that relocating the vendors has reduced traffic snarls and improved road safety.CMC said the relocation drive aims to curb littering in public places and boost municipal revenue by encouraging proper utilisation of the market complex.Previously, some vendors had opposed the move, citing difficulties in unloading or transporting goods to the first-floor stalls at the Chaudi fruit and vegetable market. A few also attempted to illegally re-occupy the roadside spaces, but they were removed on Saturday during a drive led by municipal inspector Yesso Naik Desai under the guidance of chief officer Laxmikant Desai and administrator Shankar GaonkarThe civic body’s action has been welcomed by residents of Pansulem, Patnem, Rajbagh, Kindlem and other surrounding areas, who urged the authorities to continue the campaign to ensure public convenience.
