Bengaluru: City police have recovered the skeletal remains of a 57-year-old woman, suspected to have died around 18 months ago, from the bathroom of her residence in Havanur Layout, Bagalakunte, in northwest Bengaluru.The deceased, U Dakshayini, wife of Umesh Y, hailed from Belagavi. The family had lived in the duplex house for around 15 years, police said. Her husband and son died many years ago, while her daughter lives near Bagalakunte, around 4km from the house. She is married to Dakshayini’s younger brother Mahesh, who is said to be self-employed.Alerted by neighbours about the house remaining shut for a long period, police broke open the door Friday night and found Dakshayini’s skeletal remains in the bathroom. Gold bangles and a chain were intact on the body, while valuables, including silver articles, were also undisturbed, ruling out robbery or theft, police said.The main gate, house door, and bathroom door were locked from inside, indicating Dakshayini was alone when she died.A senior police officer said Dakshayini had distanced herself from everyone, including her daughter, and there had been no communication between them for over two years. “Dakshayini frequently went on pilgrimage to different places, including North India. Thinking she must have gone on one such pilgrimage, her daughter and others did not think of contacting her,” an investigating officer said.Police are also surprised that neighbours did not notice the foul smell from the decomposing body in the initial days. “Such a smell can penetrate walls and locked doors. We’re surprised that none of the neighbours noticed it,” the senior cop said.Based on a complaint filed by Mahesh, police have registered an unnatural death report.
