Kolkata: The city and most other parts of south Bengal are set to receive moderate to heavy rain over the next two days under the impact of a low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bengal-north Odisha coasts. An associated cyclonic circulation extended up to 9.4 km above mean sea level, said a bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre on Saturday. “It’s likely to meander over the same region and become more marked during the next two to three days.”The monsoon trough passes through the centre of this low-pressure area and proceeds towards northeast Bay of Bengal. “While Kolkata is likely to receive moderate, persistent rain till at least Tuesday afternoon, the coastal areas of East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas could receive heavy showers.

As the low-pressure area is likely to have a greater impact on Odisha, places in Bengal closer to Odisha are likely to be affected. But one or two spells of heavy rain are not ruled out in the city,” said H R Biswas, deputy director-general of meteorology.Parts of Kolkata received spells of moderate rain on Saturday, when 9.6 mm of rainfall was recorded. The cloud cover narrowed down the difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures to barely three degrees. “Heavy to very heavy rain (7-20 cm) is likely to occur at one or two places over East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas and heavy rain (7-11 cm) is very likely in North 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, West Midnapore, Jhargram and Bankura. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty wind (30-40 km per hour) are likely at many places in other south Bengal districts,” added the bulletin.
