Varanasi: In an early morning operation, a man accused of killing his grandfather and cousin on July 9 was arrested after suffering bullet injuries in both legs during an encounter with Pawai police in Azamgarh on Tuesday.Santosh Yadav (33), who was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000, had allegedly killed his two relatives over a property dispute.Azamgarh CO (Phulpur) Kiranpal Singh said Pawai police were alerted by informers that Santosh, who was wanted in the double murder case, was heading towards Hewati from Oril on a motorcycle. Police laid a cordon near the Rasulabad turn on the Hewati-Oril route and tried to stop him.In an attempt to flee, Santosh tried to turn his motorcycle, but it slipped and he fell on the road. Finding himself surrounded by police, he opened fire. In retaliatory firing, he was shot in both legs. He was arrested and rushed to CHC Pawai for treatment. Police seized a country-made pistol, cartridges, the axe allegedly used in the double murder, a motorcycle and Rs 600 in cash from the spot.On the night of July 9, Santosh allegedly killed his grandfather, Jagdamba Prasad, and cousin, Shrivanshu alias Ankit, with an axe in Hewati village over a dispute regarding ancestral property.During questioning, the accused said there had been a long-running family dispute over the division of ancestral land and financial transactions.
