KGMU dy registrar resigns amid probe into pvt practice charge

Lucknow: Prof Sandeep Bhattacharya of the physiotherapy faculty has resigned as deputy registrar of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) amid an enquiry into allegations of private practice against him.KGMU has accepted the resignation and assigned additional charge of the post to Prof Jyoti Chopra of the anatomy department.The enquiry will continue despite Prof Bhattacharya’s resignation, officials said. A five-member committee constituted by KGMU is examining the allegations and will submit its report to the vice-chancellor.The allegations stem from a complaint filed in Jun by an IIM road resident, who accused Prof Bhattacharya of engaging in private practice in violation of the KGMU Act and service rules. The complaint was also submitted to the UP Medical Council and Jan Bhavan.KGMU constituted the enquiry committee following correspondence from Jan Bhavan and the medical council.The committee has recorded Prof Bhattacharya’s statement and questioned him on the allegations, officials said. During a 45-minute meeting, the panel asked more than 25 questions and sought his response to material submitted by the complainant.The committee examined photographs, patient prescriptions, investigation records and other documents submitted as evidence. Prof Bhattacharya disputed some of the material and submitted a written explanation, officials said.The panel has also sought the complainant’s statement and additional evidence, including videos and documents related to the alleged private practice.The report will be submitted to the vice-chancellor after examination of the evidence and statements, officials said. Prof Bhattacharya did not respond to TOI queries.
