The pairing of Nayanthara and Kavin in the upcoming Tamil film ‘Hi’ has stirred plenty of curiosity among moviegoers. Ever since the project was announced, fans have speculated whether the film explores a romance between an older woman and a younger man, a theory fuelled further by the six-year age gap between the two leads, with Nayanthara at 41 and Kavin at 36. The trailer, when it dropped, didn’t clearly confirm or deny the theory, leaving the question hanging. Now, Kavin has stepped in to set the record straight.
Is ‘Hi’ based on an age-gap romance?
Speaking to Galatta Plus, Kavin was asked point-blank whether ‘Hi’ centres on an age-gap romance. He shut down the speculation immediately, stating, “No, no. I would like to stop you right there. This is a very simple, ordinary love story. The love story is between two families.”He explained that once two families become entangled in a relationship, conflict naturally follows.Director Vishnu Edavan, who joined the conversation, added a cryptic but telling clarification of his own, “There is a gap, but it is not an age gap.”
Kavin addresses comparisons with ‘Vishwanath and Sons’ and other age-gap films
Kavin was also pressed on ‘Hi’s release timing, which places it close to ‘Vishwanath and Sons’ and ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’, both said to be built around relationships with a notable age difference. He clarified that the overlap was coincidental, not a trend chase: “None of us, neither our team nor theirs, knew that we would be coming along with Vishwanath and Sons. Because we started this two years ago.” In other words, the films were conceived independently, long before any comparisons were possible.

‘Hi’ marks the directorial debut of filmmaker-lyricist Vishnu Edavan and brings together a heavyweight supporting cast, including the late filmmaker Bhagyaraj, Prabhu, and Radikaa Sarathkumar in key roles. The ensemble also features VTV Ganesh, Sathyan, Amrutha Srinivasan, Aadhithya Kadhir, Kureshi, Fepsi Vijayan, Renji Panicker, Kaviya Arivumani, and Mirchi Kemy. The film has music by Jen Martin, cinematography by Rajesh Shukla, and editing by Philomin Raj. ‘Hi’ releases in theatres on August 28, with the makers choosing to let the story do the talking rather than lean on the age-gap buzz.
