Rejinagar (Murshidabad): Demanding a neutral police role and fair elections, Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chairman and Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir staged a sit-in outside Rejinagar police station on Thursday. Accompanied by state women’s wing chief Samima Laskar, Kabir began protesting at 10:20 am, pledging to stay until Friday morning.Kabir accused police of continuous torture and illegally detaining two party workers without FIRs. He alleged officers were acting as BJP agents to disrupt AJUP’s campaign for Rejinagar by-election on Oct 6, warning of a hunger strike on polling day. “I will not compromise or bow down; I will fight till the end,” Kabir said.Dismissing these claims, BJP candidate Shankharavh Sarkar called Kabir’s protest a gimmick. He urged voters to focus on development, including construction of Narkelbari bridge over Bhagirathi river and revival of Rejinagar industrial park.
