JU girl’s death in 2025 was accident, confirms forensics | Kolkata News

Kolkata: Detectives from Lalbazar have confirmed that Anamika Mondal died by accident at Jadavpur University in Sept last year. While a murder investigation was initially launched following her death, recent forensic and post-mortem findings point towards an accident rather than foul play.Mondal, a third-year English student, died during a cultural event held on the university campus. Her body was discovered floating in a pond near gate 4, a location situated close to a campus restroom. Following the discovery, Anamika’s guardians expressed suspicion regarding the circumstances of her death. They filed a murder complaint at the Jadavpur police station, suggesting she could not have fallen into the water inadvertently. This prompted the Lalbazar Detective Department to take over the case. Investigators explored three primary theories: murder, suicide or an accidental fall leading to drowning. Over the past few months, the homicide squad conducted an exhaustive probe. CCTV footage from the campus was reviewed to track Mondal’s final movements. Detectives also interrogated at least 50 people, including students, faculty members and security personnel. Mondal’s ex-boyfriend was among those questioned multiple times as police sought to establish whether there was any motive for foul play.Cops said that a key piece of evidence involves the injuries found on Mondal’s hand. Experts believe these wounds indicate a desperate attempt to “hold on to something” as she slipped, suggesting a struggle to regain her balance rather than an assault. However, the detective department has not yet submitted its final report. They have requested the medical examiners to provide a detailed clarification regarding these injuries. Once this final medical opinion is received, the police are expected to present their conclusive findings to the court.
