Jodhpur: Inspired by Rajasthan’s architectural heritage and designed to meet growing aviation demand, the new terminal at Jodhpur Airport will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 4. Featuring a fluted dome topped by a kalash on a lotus base, the terminal combines traditional Rajputana aesthetics with modern passenger facilities.Designed by Sthapati India, the 2.52 lakh sq ft terminal has been built at an estimated cost of Rs400 crore. It can handle two million passengers annually, with a peak-hour capacity of 1,000 passengers and six aerobridges providing direct access to aircraft.
The terminal’s facade incorporates Rajputana-inspired elements
The terminal reflects Jodhpur’s aviation legacy, which began in 1931 when the then ruler Umaid Singh established the Jodhpur Flying Club. Its facade incorporates Rajputana-inspired elements, including carved GFRC surfaces, multifoil arches, decorative columns, and a grand domed gateway reminiscent of Rajasthan’s forts and palaces.Inside, natural light dominates the design, while climate-responsive glazing and building materials minimise solar heat gain in Jodhpur’s hot-arid climate. Artwork created with regional artists features peacock motifs and royal court scenes, bringing Rajasthani painting traditions into a contemporary public space.Speaking to TOI, Vipul B. Varshneya, director, Sthapati India, said, “The terminal’s planning is rooted in efficiency and passenger flow. Arrivals and departures have been separated, with island check-in counters, linear security zones, dedicated staff routes and improved baggage circulation.”The building is also targeting GRIHA certification through insulated construction, shading, controlled glazing, solar installations and energy-efficient HVAC systems. Architect Khushboo Bansal said, “Sustainability is most effective when it is embedded in the planning of a building rather than introduced through isolated technologies.”Airport director Manoj Uniyal said the new terminal was needed as passenger traffic has doubled over the past 12 years, crossing one million last year. The airport currently handles 14-16 flights daily in summer and 25-30 during the winter tourist season.
