Hyderabad: An 18-year-old Intermediate student of a govt junior college in Gadwal, who scored 98.6% in the first-year board exams, died by suicide on Tuesday after he was allegedly humiliated and slapped by a teacher. The student left a suicide note and, based on his family’s complaint, the teacher was booked for abetting the suicide.The teenager, a native of Kothapalli village in Gadwal mandal, was an Intermediate II year student of Govt Junior College, Gadwal. In the first-year board exams, the teenager scored 434 out of 440 marks and stood second among govt junior college students in Jogulamba Gadwal district, the teenager’s brother T Mohan said in his complaint to police.On Tuesday, the student did not go to college. His parents went to a temple in the afternoon, and his elder brother went to his in-law’s house.At 4pm, when his parents returned home, the main door was latched from inside. As the student did not open the door for a long time and did not respond to calls, they sent a 15-year-old relative from the neighbourhood into the house through an opening in the roof by tying a rope to him.“The boy opened the door from inside, and my parents found my brother hanging from the ceiling rod with a sari,” Mohan said in the complaint.A two-page suicide note was found on the teenager’s bed in which he wrote that on July 27, a teacher at the junior college humiliated him in the presence of his fellow students and teachers. “She criticised him for securing one mark less than a fellow student. When my brother questioned her for humiliating him, she insulted him by asking, ‘Are you the son of a minister?’ and slapped him in front of other students. Due to this incident, my brother became traumatised. Unable to bear the humiliation, he died by suicide,” Mohan alleged.The complainant requested police to initiate appropriate legal action against the teacher. “Based on the complaint, Gadwal Rural police booked a case under Section 108 (Abetment to suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the teacher on Wednesday. We are enquiring into the allegations, and appropriate legal action will be initiated after the preliminary investigation. The body of the student was handed over to his family on Wednesday after the post-mortem examination,” Gadwal circle inspector (CI) T Sreenu said.
