The deadline is met, the laptop is shut, and that is when the headaches, exhaustion and sleepless nights arrive. Bengaluru doctors say the body often shows the strain only after pressure eases, and the signs are easy to dismiss as ordinary tiredness.

Crash After Peak Stress

Weeks of deadlines, poor sleep and irregular meals can leave people running on empty. Yet headaches, fatigue and other symptoms may surface only after the pressure eases. Doctors call this the let-down effect.

Why It Happens

Changes in sleep, eating habits, hydration and caffeine consumption may contribute. Stress-related changes in the body’s response systems may also influence susceptibility to migraines.Dr Surbhi Chaturvedi, consultant – neurology & head of stroke programme, Aster Whitefield Hospitals, said a study published in neurology found that lower perceived stress was associated with an increased chance of migraine in the following hours. However, this doesn’t establish a single cause or explain every post-stress symptom.

Not Just Workplace Problem

Young professionals in technology, healthcare, banking and consultancy may be vulnerable, but the effect is not limited to office workers. Homemakers managing household chores and school routines can also experience sustained stress and sleep deprivation. What You May Experience

  • Headaches or migraines
  • Exhaustion and low energy
  • Muscle pain
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms or flu-like illness

Body’s Recovery Phase

Stress activates the body’s neuroendocrine and autonomic systems, helping people respond to demanding situations. Once the pressure eases, symptoms linked to accumulated sleep deprivation, exhaustion or an underlying illness may become more noticeable.

Don’t Ignore The Signs

Not every symptom that appears after a stressful period is caused by the let-down effect. Persistent or severe symptoms warrant medical assessment to rule out other conditions.
