IIT-B student’s final rites completed in Yavatmal as protest continues on Mumbai campus; 150 cops deployed

Mumbai: The final rites of IIT-B student Sahil Wakode were completed in his hometown in Yavatmal on Sunday, a day after his family claimed his body after post-mortem examination.Wakode’s father is expected to meet the joint commissioner of police for an update in the death by suicide case, lawyer Nikhil Kamble said.As IIT-B students continued to protest against the death by suicide of second-year BTech student Wakode on the campus, police prevented them from moving onto Adi Shankaracharya Marg, which connects to Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, around 7pm, an officer told TOI on Sunday.Campus exit gates were barricaded after 70-80 placard-carrying students appeared ready to stage a sit-in on the main road. Their number rose to 6,000 within a few hours. At least 150 personnel from Powai, Sakinaka, Meghwadi, Jogeshwari, Andheri and MIDC police stations were deployed at IIT-B’s Powai campus to manage the situation.The deployment included additional commissioner of police Abhinav Deshmukh, deputy commissioner of police Datta Nalawade and three assistant commissioners who along with the force controlled the students for over 10 hours.Mumbai crime branch has taken over the investigation into the death of Wakode, a second-year energy science student who was found dead in his hostel room hours after he was allegedly being caught using a mobile phone during an examination at IIT-Bombay on Friday.No arrest had been made until Sunday. Investigators will examine CCTV footage and his seized phone, a Powai police officer said.
