Varanasi: The native village of BSP MLA Umashankar Singh was plunged into grief following his death, with large crowds gathering since Friday morning to pay their last respects.Singh, 55, who represented the Rasra Assembly constituency, passed away late Wednesday night in New Delhi after a prolonged battle with cancer.His mortal remains were brought from Delhi to Lucknow and later taken to Khanwar in a convoy of hundreds of vehicles. A large number of supporters gathered near Parjipar on Kasimabad Road along the Purvanchal Expressway to offer their final tributes.A native of Ballia, Singh first won the Rasra Assembly seat on a BSP ticket in 2012. He was re-elected in 2017 and 2022. In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, when the BSP secured only one seat, Singh remained the party’s sole MLA in the state.Singh was known for his public service and enjoyed strong support in the region. He played a key role in organising mass marriage events and worked to promote digital awareness. He also contributed significantly to the launch of a free Wi-Fi zone in Rasra.
