Kolkata: Housing and a job have been arranged for Sita Devi, the homeless woman on Free School Street off Park Street whom minister Agnimitra Paul had admonished days ago for heating milk on the pavement, the minister said on Friday.Paul said accommodation had been arranged at a location chosen by Devi’s family, along with a livelihood opportunity to help them become self-reliant and move off the pavement. The development came two days after CM Suvendu Adhikari met Devi and her family at his public grievance hearing, Janatar Durbar, and assured them of rehabilitation. He directed the KMC to arrange proper housing, saying roads and footpaths were meant for pedestrian movement, not for people to live on.A BJP worker said the CM had ensured the family’s accommodation and food for three days while housing was being arranged in a locality of their choice. Devi has now been offered a job at a restaurant.A video of Paul admonishing Devi had gone viral earlier, drawing widespread criticism over its perceived insensitivity towards the homeless family. Paul later said she should have explained the matter more gently, adding that she had acted out of concern for the infant’s safety and did not intend to scold Devi.
