Hi-impact targeting tech for Su-30 from Chandigarh lab
operates in all weather conditions

Chandigarh: In a boost to India’s defence indigenisation efforts, Chandigarh-based Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) has developed an indigenous targeting and tracking system for the Indian Air Force’s Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft and is now ready to transfer the technology for commercial production.The newly developed Optical Module has successfully completed flight trials, received certification for integration on the Su-30 MKI and is capable of detecting, tracking and designating targets during combat as well as reconnaissance missions. The development comes at a time when the Indian Air Force is pursuing upgrades for its frontline fighter fleet while reducing dependence on imported military technology.The system combines advanced electro-optical and infrared sensors with a laser range finder and laser designator, enabling pilots to identify targets and carry out precision engagements during day and night operations, including in adverse weather conditions.Mounted on a gyro-stabilised platform, the module remains steady during high-speed manoeuvres, improving targeting accuracy and situational awareness for pilots. CSIO said the technology is now ready for transfer to private or public-sector manufacturers for large-scale production.The Su-30 MKI forms the backbone of the Indian Air Force, with around 260 aircraft currently in service. The fighter fleet is undergoing a mid-life upgrade programme to enhance operational capabilities, including integration of advanced weapons systems.The project builds on CSIO’s long association with military aviation. The Chandigarh laboratory had earlier developed head-up display systems for the Su-30 MKI cockpit and has also supplied navigation lights, naval landing aids, alignment tools and gunsights for various military aircraft and helicopters.
