Silchar: Vehicular movement along NH-27, between Silchar and Haflong, came to a complete halt after a massive landslide, triggered by incessant rainfall, hit the Jatinga area in Dima Hasao early on Sunday.Local sources said a large quantity of rocks and debris fell onto the highway around 1 am in the intervening night between Saturday and Sunday, blocking the arterial route and stranding hundreds of passengers and vehicles on both sides. While district administration officials and concerned departments began clearance operations with immediate effect, heavy debris slowed down restoration work. Authorities advised commuters to avoid the Haflong–Silchar route, unless it was essential.A rescue team member said multiple earthmovers had been deployed. “The landslide occurred during the night. Clearance work is underway and it may take another two to three hours to make the stretch motorable,” he said. One stranded driver said rocks and mud came crashing down from the hillside around 1.30 am, completely blocking the road. “Fortunately, no vehicle was hit and there were no casualties,” he said.Another driver said long queues had formed on both sides of the highway. “Excavators and other machinery are being used to clear the road. We have been informed that traffic may resume by evening,” he added.
