HC restrains magazine from linking ex-minister to Palani temple land issue

Chennai: Madras high court on Friday restrained a Tamil magazine from claiming that the persons involved in the Palani temple land scam are related to a former minister, or that the land has been purchased by him through benamis.Justice Hemant Chandangoudar passed the interim order on a suit moved by the former minister R Sakkarapani against Junior Vikatan, YouTube and others.Acceding to the submissions of senior advocate P Wilson, the judge said, “The publication proceeded to suggest that the investigation in respect of the transaction could reach the former minister.”The allegations directly concern the plaintiff’s reputation and, if permitted to remain in circulation during the pendency of the proceedings, may cause continuing prejudice, which may not be adequately compensated by damages alone, the judge said.He then directed the publication to remove the articles and videos pointed out in the suit from online and social media platforms, and restrained it from publishing any similar content until Oct 28.
