HC notice to govt on preventive detention of YouTuber

Chennai: Madras high court has sought police response in two habeas corpus petitions challenging detention of YouTuber Mukthar Ahmed and political commentator under Goondas Act, who were arrested for their derogatory remarks against a BJP functionary.Admitting the petitions on Friday, the division bench comprising Justice Anita Sumanth and Justice Sunder Mohan directed the Chennai police to file their counters and posted the hearing four weeks later.Trichy Surya was arrested on June 4, a day after the former woman functionary of BJP lodged a complaint with city police alleging that he and Mukthar had made derogatory, sexually explicit and defamatory remarks against her. Police later arrested Mukthar in Mysore on June 9.Chennai police invoked the Goondas Act against both Mukthar Ahmed and Trichy Surya Siva, ordering their preventive detention on June 16. The petitions challenging order argued procedural lapses or unconstitutionality in the preventive detention orders.
