Handloom Day event puts spotlight on sustainable fashion

Guwahati: Assam Royal Global University marked National Handloom Day on Friday with an industry-academia programme on sustainable fashion and entrepreneurship.The Royal School of Fashion Design and Technology organised the event with the Institution’s Innovation Council and Entrepreneurship Cell and was supported by the Foundation for MSME Clusters.Speakers included fashion entrepreneur Robert Naorem, former Handloom and Textiles deputy director Jayanta Dev Sharma, Studio Anurupa founder Anoushka Das and Ezaar Collective founder Barsha. They discussed building creative enterprises rooted in indigenous crafts.IIC-EC director Sriparna Bhuyan Baruah said, “The university seeks to inspire students to develop technology-driven solutions, ethical business models and sustainable enterprises that empower weavers and preserve traditional craftsmanship.”Artisans from Pairanga in Boko demonstrated Eri silk weaving and natural dyeing, while Majuli artists showcased Assamese manuscript painting.An exhibition featured Eri silk products developed by Pairanga weavers under the Cisco CSR Project, allowing participants to interact with artisans and learn about their craftsmanship.
