Hailakandi bans gatherings amid paper leak protests

Silchar: Hailakandi district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023, citing the need to maintain law and order amid nationwide protests over the alleged examination paper leak.In the order issued by the district magistrate, the administration said there was a likelihood of rallies, demonstrations, road blockades and other forms of agitation that could disturb public peace, disrupt traffic and essential services, and cause damage to public and private property.Under the restrictions, the assembly of five or more persons in any public place without prior permission from the competent authority has been prohibited. Organising or participating in rallies, protests, dharnas, public meetings or road blockades without official approval has also been banned.The order also bars carrying firearms, explosives, swords, spears, sticks, iron rods, sharp-edged objects or any other potential weapons in public places. The restriction does not apply to authorised personnel performing official duties.The administration has further prohibited acts intended to incite violence, disturb public order, obstruct vehicular movement or disrupt the functioning of govt offices, educational institutions, hospitals and other essential services.It also prohibits preventing govt officials from discharging their duties, intimidating public servants, indulging in vandalism or damaging public or private property.Officials said the order has taken effect immediately and will remain in force until further notice. Violations will invite legal action under relevant provisions of the BNSS, 2023, and other applicable laws.
