Ahmedabad: Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is accelerating in Gujarat, with registrations almost doubling during the first six months of 2026 compared to last year, as buyers increasingly shift towards cleaner mobility options. EV registrations in Gujarat rose 97% from 28,148 units during Jan-June 2025 to 55,344 units during the same period this year, according to data by the Union ministry of road transport and highways.June too showed a strong momentum, with an 88% rise in sales from 6,276 units in 2025 to 11,786 units in 2026. Automobile industry experts indicate this is a function of alternate fuel-based cars being increasingly preferred by customers. The trend mirrored pan-India numbers as well.“Several factors are driving EV adoption. The Prime Minister’s call to reduce dependence on imported petrol and diesel has increased awareness, while battery technology has improved significantly. Buyers today have more models to choose from, vehicle quality has improved and pricing has become more competitive. Battery warranties have also been extended to as much as seven years, boosting customer confidence. Continued subsidies for electric two-wheelers and passenger vehicles have further supported demand,” said Pranav Shah, chairperson of Federation of Automobile Dealers Association, Gujarat.
EV sales soar in Gujarat
Fada data showed alternative-fuel passenger vehicles crossed a significant milestone in June, accounting for more than 40% of total passenger vehicle retail sales for the first time.According to Fada, CNG, hybrid, and electric vehicles together made up 40.35% of passenger vehicle sales during the month across India. CNG vehicles accounted for 24.33% of the market, followed by hybrids at 8.27% and electric vehicles at 7.75%.“Demand has increased not only for EVs but also for hybrid models as well in Gujarat. A faster charging network, particularly on highways, would encourage more buyers to switch to EVs,” said a senior RTO officer in Gandhinagar.“Rising fuel prices have also made EVs more attractive. While hybrid and CNG vehicles continue to see healthy demand, higher CNG prices have prompted some buyers, especially those using vehicles mainly for city travel, to opt for EVs instead,” the official added.Passenger EV retail sales across India also touched a record high of 31,823 units in June, underlining the growing acceptance of battery-powered mobility.Industry observers said the steady expansion of charging infrastructure, a wider choice of electric models across price segments and lower running costs compared with conventional fuel vehicles are encouraging more buyers to switch to EVs. Improved financing options and increasing consumer familiarity with electric mobility have also supported demand.Dealers expect demand to remain firm in the coming months, supported by new model launches and improving charging networks, although the pace of growth will also depend on consumer sentiment and overall vehicle demand.
