Greater Bangalore Authority commissioner’s identity faked in WhatsApp fraud

Bengaluru: A case of cyber fraud and identity misuse was filed Wednesday at Amruthahalli police station in north Bengaluru against “unknown person” for impersonating Bengaluru North City Corporation commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar to solicit funds on WhatsApp.The FIR was filed by a gazetted officer, Akshath M M, a resident of Sahakaranagar, following a suspicious online incident earlier in the day. Police said preliminary findings indicate that unknown persons misused the name, designation and photograph of Kumar to send WhatsApp messages from an international number. The fraudulent communication was also reportedly sent to Amaresh H, secretary of State Election Commission.“This is a clear case of impersonation intended to defraud unsuspecting individuals,” an official of Greater Bangalore Authority (GBA) said. Police said the accused was listed as “Unknown Person (A1)” in the FIR.
