Govt to provide free new textbooks to flood-hit students: Pegu

Guwahati: The Assam govt will provide fresh sets of free textbooks to students whose books were lost or damaged in the ongoing floods, education minister Ranoj Pegu said on Saturday, aiming to minimise disruption to the academic session in the worst-affected districts. After assessing flood damage across several districts, Pegu said the Assam State Textbook Production and Publication Corporation has been directed to immediately begin preparations for resupplying textbooks. “All inspectors of schools (IS) and district elementary education officers (DEEOs) have been directed to submit their textbook requirements at the earliest to facilitate timely distribution,” Pegu said.

The minister said the govt would replace textbooks for all students in the flood-ravaged districts of Charaideo and Sivasagar, where large-scale inundation has damaged homes, schools and educational materials.“For the flood-affected districts of Charaideo and Sivasagar, we are making arrangements to resupply textbooks for the entire district,” he said.“The textbooks will be dispatched as soon as schools reopen, ensuring that students can resume their learning without disruption. Education must continue, even in the face of adversity,” Pegu said. The decision comes as families continue to deal with the aftermath of floods triggered by heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers. The floods have damaged homes and public infrastructure and destroyed school bags, uniforms, notebooks and textbooks, affecting students’ ability to return to classes after schools reopen. The govt’s move is expected to provide relief to parents already struggling to rebuild their lives after the floods while ensuring that children do not fall behind academically because of the disaster.
