New Delhi: Former Delhi Medical Council (DMC) registrar Dr Girish Tyagi, who was recently named in a special audit report over alleged financial irregularities and “unlawful monetary benefits” running into crores, has now been voted as the Delhi Medical Association’s (DMA) representative to the DMC.The DMA on Saturday conducted elections for its lone representative seat to the 25-member Delhi Medical Council. Dr Tyagi, among several condidates, secured a decisive victory at DMA House in Daryaganj, defeating four other candidates. The results, released by DMA, showed that Dr Tyagi received 1,276 votes, while the runner up secured 790.The election assumes significance because it comes barely days after a special audit report submitted to Delhi govt’s health and family welfare department accused Tyagi, during his tenure as DMC registrar between 2019 and 2025, of financial and administrative irregularities allegedly causing losses of over Rs 5.57 crore to the exchequer. The audit report alleged that lower registration renewal fees were charged from doctors, resulting in substantial revenue losses. It further flagged irregularities amounting to around Rs 1.24 crore linked to staff regularisation, payments to private firms, medical insurance expenses for council members and purchase of “costly gift items” during Diwali. The report also questioned the legality of Tyagi’s continuation in office after retirement age, stating that the extension of retirement age from 60 to 65 years violated applicable rules and govt orders.Tyagi said that decisions taken during his tenure were taken collectively by the council and pointed out that related matters were pending in courts. He also defended his tenure by citing action taken against quacks and illegal medical practice. The DMA has described the election as “free, fair and transparent”. DMA president Dr Neelam Lekhi told TOI that the result would be communicated to the DMC before May 20.She explained that DMC comprises 25 members, nine elected directly by registered medical practitioners, 12 elected from medical colleges, four nominated by the Delhi government, and two ex-officio members. With DMA having now chosen its representative, elections for the remaining eight directly elected seats are scheduled for May 31, which will be selected from different medical colleges in Delhi. DMA has nearly 70,000 registered doctors in Delhi.
