Hyderabad: Power outages have once again emerged as a major concern across Hyderabad after just two spells of monsoon rain this season, with several neighbourhoods experiencing prolonged electricity disruptions following Friday night’s showers.Residents from Kukatpally, Miyapur, LB Nagar, Uppal and parts of Secunderabad said power cuts have become increasingly common even during moderate rain and strong winds. In many areas, electricity supply was restored only in the early hours of Saturday. Many residents noted that repeated pre-monsoon showers over the past few weeks have triggered similar disruptions, affecting households and disturbing sleep.“Power cuts have become very frequent these days. In our area, the electricity went off even before the rain started because of the strong winds and returned only late at night. Every spell of rain now leaves us worried about how long we will be without power,” said Ashfaq Ahmed, a resident of Masab Tank.Another resident, K Lavanya from Attapur, said the outage lasted for several hours while floodwater entered her home.“The electricity went off around 10 pm and returned only after 2 am. Water was seeping into our house and our entire lane was flooded. It was a horrible experience, especially because we have elderly people at home who struggled through the night without electricity,” she said.Mahesh Yadav, a resident of Abids, said repeated outages pose a serious risk for families with elderly members and those dependent on medical equipment.“My father is elderly and depends on oxygen support during emergencies. Whenever there is heavy rain, the power goes off for hours and our entire lane gets flooded. If we need to rush him to the hospital, even that becomes difficult because the roads are waterlogged. For some, a power cut may just be an inconvenience, but for families like ours, it can become a matter of life and death. If something goes wrong, who will take responsibility?” he said.According to HYDRAA officials, as many as 27 trees fell across the city during Friday night’s rain and gusty winds, causing traffic disruptions and property damage in several localities.Officials from the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) said most rain-related power outages occur when trees and branches fall on overhead electricity lines.“We received about 200 complaints over the last two days, but we were able to attend to most of them within a few hours,” a TGSPDCL official said.
